The Benefits of Staying Active at Every Age

On 18th September, we celebrate National Fitness Day, a day that reminds us of the importance of movement, health, and wellbeing. Fitness isn’t about running marathons or lifting heavy weights; it’s about finding ways to stay active that suit your body, your lifestyle, and your goals. Whether you’re a child building healthy habits, an adult balancing work and life, or an older adult wanting to stay mobile and independent, regular physical activity has benefits for everyone.

Why fitness matters for all ages

Staying active from a young age sets the foundation for a healthy life. Exercise helps improve coordination, balance, and bone strength, while also boosting mood and concentration. It can even enhance learning and social skills through team sports and group activities.

For adults, busy schedules take over and it can be easy to let fitness slide. But keeping active is a powerful tool for managing stress, improving sleep, and supporting mental wellbeing. Physically, it helps maintain a healthy weight, strengthens the heart and lungs, and reduces the risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

When it comes to older adults, fitness plays a key role in maintaining independence and quality of life. Activities like walking, yoga, or swimming help preserve mobility, flexibility, and balance, reducing the risk of falls. Exercise also supports bone health and keeps joints moving, which is especially important as we age.

Exercise isn’t just about physical health – it has a direct impact on our mental wellbeing. Regular activity releases endorphins, the body’s “feel-good” hormones, which can help reduce anxiety and depression. It also fosters confidence, resilience, and a positive outlook, no matter your age or ability.

How to get involved

  • Try something new – join a club, take up a new sport, or explore a new walking route.

  • Move with others – exercising with friends, family, or colleagues adds motivation and fun (possibly in a Rise session!).

  • Set small, realistic goals – 10 minutes of activity a day can propel positive changes

What’s our key takeaway from National Fitness Day?

One of the most important messages of National Fitness Day is inclusivity. Fitness is for everyone – regardless of ability, background, or fitness level. From adaptive sports to low-impact classes, there are countless ways to get moving in ways that feel safe and enjoyable. Even small daily choices – like taking the stairs, stretching during work breaks, or walking to the shops – can make a meaningful difference.
